Teri Arranga is a liar

Woo - I'm in the Autism One newsletter! Teri Arranga - who, I should point out, is a liar - is trying to convince her members that there is a conspiracy of violence to shut down that other liar, Andrew Wakefield.

If Teri would can produce evidence that:

  • I have sent any more than two emails to the Ritz Carlton Group

  • I have ever telephoned the Ritz Carlton Group

  • I have ever sent a fax to the Ritz Carlton Group

  • I contacted the Ritz Carlton Group on more than one day

  • I used language that could be construed as "bullying", "intimidating" or "harrassing" in my two emails (actually just one email, sent to two addresses)

  • The Ritz Carlton told me to "take a hike" - or in fact contacted me in any way

then I will retract my allegation that she is a liar, and that she's lying to the members of Autism One.

Rebecca Fisher: Pharma Blowhard or Concerned Citizen?

You can't be a parent in this community without bumping into them. Every article, TV program, blog or radio show brings them out in force. The mention of "autism" or "Dr. Wakefield" brings them scurrying out from under their rocks snapping and snarling and spitting about the wonders of vaccines and their self-anointed roles as concerned citizens in protecting the pubic health.

It's a scam and we all know it. Most of the bloggers, poseurs, and self-ordained autism experts have ties either directly or indirectly to pharma or mainstream medicine (which is really one and the same thing). Age of Autism has done a remarkable job outing Orac and shedding light on the soft underbelly of the vaccine apologists.

Hmm... Orac is an Oncologist. Demonstrating his links to "mainstream medicine" isn't going to be too hard, even for the morons at AoA…

Rebecca Fisher of the UK has been very busy lately. Blogging here under the title "JABS Loonies - Justice, Awareness, Basic Support and Mind Blowing Stupidity," Rebecca recently left the Internet safety of anonymity to engage in more concrete acts of aggression against our community.

"Concrete acts of aggression"??? What - have I started actually attacking people in the manner of an anti-abortion activist? Or have I started performing colonoscopies on children who don't need them or something?

Rebecca's current mission is attempting to frighten, bully or pressure venues Dr. Wakefield is scheduled to speak at on his current book tour into canceling the event. Hotels are under siege by email, fax, and phone demanding they cancel Dr. Wakefield's appearance.

Maybe, but not from me. I've written a couple of emails, suggesting, not demanding.

For a week before this past Saturday, Rebecca attempted to intimidate the Phoenix Ritz-Carlton site of Dr. Wakefield's latest talk into capitulation. To their credit the Ritz told her, in essence, to take a hike.

No. Last Wednesday I wrote two (non-threatening) emails, one to the contact address on the Ritz-Carlton (Phoenix)'s website, and, because that looked very dodgy (phxrz.leads@ritzcarlton.com) (ETA: Actually, I've just worked that one out - phxrz - Phoenix Ritz. D'oh.), one to the main comments email address for Ritz Carlton hotels (comments@ritzcarlton.com). That's it. I did not phone, I did not fax, I did not try and intimidate anyone for a whole week. The Ritz did not tell me to "take a hike" - they never even replied, which is, of course, their right.

Teri Arranga, you are a liar. You are trying to frighten your members even more than you do already. You are inventing some sort of campaign of violence where none exists.

Rebecca, who also blogs as Becky Fisseux, will continue to act in a dangerous and reckless fashion until she is outed and her connections to pharma publically revealed.

Still the attacks will continue until we take legal and other appropriate actions necessary to incur real costs on those who spread lies and misinformation.

My connections to pharma? You'll have to look a long way Teri. I don't have any.

And "dangerous and reckless"? Coming from someone who promotes reintroducing measles and other lethal diseases as though they were some kind of endangered animal that's a bit fucking rich.

Anyway, here's the email I sent:

Andrew Wakefield June 26 at The Ritz in Phoenix

Dear Sir / Madam,

I'm writing to express my extreme disappointment that such a well thought of hotel as the Ritz is playing host to this event on Saturday.

Disappointingly, The Autism Society of Greater Phoenix has chosen your venue to promote unsupported quack therapies and to support Andrew Wakefield, a man whose scaremongering has led to disastrous falls in vaccination levels among children. Levels have fallen so far that measles - a potentially fatal or crippling disease, even in countries with good levels of health care such as the UK - is now reported as once again being endemic here. Vaccination is arguably the greatest medical invention or discovery of our age, and has without doubt saved more lives worldwide than any other medical procedure. Hosting a book signing by Mr Wakefield would only indicate support for his unethical methods (including taking blood from children at a birthday party, and carrying out colonoscopies on vunerable autistic children for non-medically indicated reasons)

Many anti-vaccine activists want to return us to an age of deaths from preventable illnesses, claiming, against all evidence that vaccines are harmful, simply in order to promote their own agenda.

Andrew Wakefield is not a brave, maverick doctor, fighting the establishment, as The Autism Society of Greater Phoenix would have it; rather he has recently been struck off the medical register for horrific breaches of ethics involving non-indicated clinical procedures on children and undisclosed conflicts of interest.

Should you allow this event to go ahead, I fear your company's reputation will be seriously tarnished, and respectfully ask you to reconsider your decision.

Best regards,

Rebecca Fisher

I've noticed AoA applies "threatening" in very "inventive" ways. They described a letter I sent to Neurotoxiciology as "threatening". The only "threat" in the letter in question was that I informed them I would call for a boycott of their journal if they didn't pull Wakefield's last paper (and I did). Amusingly, when AoA referred to my letter deceptively and without acknowledgement, at least one commenter assumed it was from some Elsevier executive.

I seriously suggest suing AoA for libel, and maybe plagiarism. I would have months ago, but I have no money.

Ha, I knew it! You are really Brian Deer!

"I have just read Rebecca Fisher's website for the first time. This is clearly not written by a woman with a child. The syntax, the phrasing, the scatology is remarkably similar to the postings by Brian Deer on other websites. Fisher even uses the same phrases - eg blithering idiot.
Is Rebecca Fisher really Brian Deer? If so, that is important."

Clearly. In a dress.

Where did I ever use the phrase "blithering idiot" I wonder.

Teri Arranga is indeed a liar. Two years ago, she expelled me from the AutismOne conference, ostensibly because I was not registered. In fact, her husband had approved of my press credentials, but the AutOne computers had crashed prior to when I arrived at the Westin O'Hare in Chicago, and a staff member at the registration desk gave me a piece of cardboard to write my name on as proof of my registration. You can read what happened next here:

http://autism-news-beat.com/archives/62

When the Arrangas realized that I was registered, they changed the reason for my expulsion to "unauthorized videotaping". Expect that in 2008, there were no restriction of using a video camera at AutOne.Now they claim I was disruptive.

In 2009, Teri Arranga expelled at Chicago Tribune reporter from AutOne because the writer, Trine Tsouderos, wrote an article critical of the quack bio-med movement.

This year, Teri Arranga expelled a staff member from the California Department of Public Health, and also a Chicago area filmmaker. You can read about it here:

http://autism-news-beat.com/archives/1030

If you ask Teri Arranga why those individuals were expelled, she would probably lie.

The anti-vaccine movement is claarly in free fall is it can't accommodate dissenting points of view.

And Teri Arranga is a liar.

I would really appreciate if you can help me tell the difference between what you say and what Teri Arranga has said, because it seems as though you are guilty of word play and lies just as you say Teri Arrange has.
"Disappointingly, The Autism Society of Greater Phoenix has chosen your venue to promote unsupported quack therapies and to support Andrew Wakefield, a man whose scaremongering has led to disastrous falls in vaccination levels among children."
*Please state your reference, and define your meaning of 'disasterous' witin this context.

"Levels have fallen so far that measles - a potentially fatal or crippling disease,
*Please provide your comparison of the risks of Measles vs. risks of Autism and state sources to your conclusions of those risks

"...even in countries with good levels of health care such as the UK - is now reported as once again being endemic here."

*Provide source and specifics including how you define "endemic"

"Vaccination ... saved more lives worldwide than any other medical procedure."

*State facts and sources please

"Hosting a book signing by Mr Wakefield... and carrying out colonoscopies on vunerable autistic children for non-medically indicated reasons)"

*Please show the source and facts that show that Dr. Andrew Wakefield had completed "non-medically indicated" colonoscopies on children with Autism.

I am really desperately trying to research this topic from ALL sides to be able to make an educated decisions and learn more about the REAL story of Autism, Vaccines, Genes, Viruses, and everything inbetween. Including the good, the bad and all around. The truth's, lies, and all aspects: Medical, Social, Behavioral/etc.

I have had a rough time finding the true realities of all of this because SO much that is 'out there' TO research includes personal attacks, whether offensively or defensively presented.
Unless FACTS are presented along with posts like yours for instance, how can anyone who is honestly looking for TRUE and REAL answers take your word, or anyone else's, seriously without any mention of any REAL background to your statements.
This is the first time I found your blog and is the only article I have read so far, but I cant seem to warrant reading any further or taking anything written her for more than what I read, just personal attacks, not just about Teri Arranga, but in your email to the Ritz. You say they failed to respond to your email. I have to say if I were in their shoes, I would not have responded either because of the lack of any real content, any real facts/figures/links to sources/etc. I think, if backed by true and honest and real and complete information, where you could show your points to be true and factual, I am willing to bet that the Ritz would have at the very least contacted you to find out further information, because with all honesty, no one should ever want to promote, for any amount of money, anything that does promote what you are claiming.

My hope is that I learn as much as I can about this subject and all that relates to it, but to do that, I really hope that you can present the answers to my questions and show me, and everyone else that you are not doing the same thing that you are accussing someone else of, that you have actual facts and figures to your statements. I have found out thru my journey thru Autism education, that so much "information" on ALL sides of this topic have just continued to pass 'statements' on from one site to another, without linking sources, and statements said/written simply become consensus statements rather than the sharing of actual facts. I hope you can rise above and share your sources in an attempt to show you are, in fact, to be believed. That your facts are the real deal. It might help to also share how you are related to the Autism arena so that the readers can get a sense of where your opinions are stemming from.
Please help, I appreciate it! Thanks!
Jim

Jim, who are you addressing? Becky or Autism News Beat? If you follow ANB's links you will see what happened.

If you think Becky is lying, then ask Teri Arranga to show evidence that she contacted the Phoenix Ritz on more than one day and sent more than two emails. Surely, Ms. Arranga has the evidence to back up her assertions.

Just like ANB can bring up evidence that he was registered for the conference he was kicked out of. Actually, in the comments on that article is a comment with links to many other videos taken at that conference by a journalism student. I clicked on it, and they seem to still be there, including video of the panel ANB was kicked out of: http://combatingautismfromwithin.blogspot.com/2008/05/journalism-panel.html

Which pretty much confirms that Ms. Arranga was lying about "unauthorized videotaping".

I think it is pretty clear that Ms. Arranga has problems with truth.

The rest I am not so sure how to follow what you are saying. What kind of research are you doing? If it is actual science, you are not going to get much in the way of emotion.

There is a list of recommended reading, guaranteed to be devoid of emotional arguments. If you have any actual evidence that there is a connection between autism and vaccines, do please present them. Just be sure that they are of the quality of the listed studies, and are not retracted and are not from vanity journals like "Medical Hypothesis", "Medical Veritas" and "Autism Insights."

Here is the list (it is mostly on vaccines, and their impact... the list of autism and genetics papers would be even longer), many are available free online and you can contact your local library to get the rest:

Measles being endemic:
Health Protection Agency, 2008,
http://www.hpa.org.uk/hpr/archives/2008/news2108.htm#measls

"All recent indigenously-acquired cases with a genotype have been shown to be the same D4 sequence (MVs/Enfield.GBR/14.07). This genotype was first identified in April 2007 and is now endemic in the UK."

Risk / Benefit analysis of vaccination vs measles (taken from a recent Guardian CiF thread, compiled by DeeTee from (I understand) HPA stats):
If one million kids are given vaccine (MMR):
1000 will have a febrile convulsion.
30 will get thrombocytopenia.
10 will get a severe allergic reaction.
1 will get encephalitis (ADEM).

If one million kids get measles (in Europe, in the 21st century):
200 will die.
100,000 will be ill enough to need hospitalisation.
90,000 will get otitis media.
80,000 will get gastroenteritis.
50,000 will get primary viral or secondary bacterial pneumonia.
5000 will have a febrile convulsion.
1000 will get encephalitis (ADEM or SSPE), 100 of whom will die and 2-300 will have residual brain damage.
1000 will get various other problems such as hepatitis, myocarditis, thrombocytopenia or miscarriage if caught in pregnancy.

Non-medically indicated colonoscopies:
http://www.gmc-uk.org/static/documents/content/Wakefield__Smith_Murch.pdf
(Just read it - the whole thing - in order to get some idea of exactly what Wakefield got up to. Not the frequent use of the phrase "admitted and proved". Especially the word "admitted". If he's so sure of no wrong doing, why admit most of it?)

Vaccines most successful health development:
This piece from the Public Health Agency of Canada is probably as good as anything:
http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/im/measure-intervention-eng.php

Please remember that my email was just that - an email. It was not a scientific paper.

Frankly, you don't sound as though you're terribly interested in researching anything. You've clearly made up your mind.

I've considered in the past writing a more detailed biography, but frankly, the obsession with my "identity" is starting to get a little creepy.
